ABOUT PRE-PROFESSIONAL

The Pre-Professional division provides training for aspiring professionals in an atmosphere that promotes artistic excellence, strong technique, and sense of community. Dancers invited to participate in this audition-only program are encouraged to find their creative voice as they gain the building blocks for success.

Through rigorous training and participation in numerous performance opportunities, graduates of the Pre-Professional division flourish in elite college dance programs, conservatories, and dance companies, and can be seen in commercial work and on Broadway.

DRESS CODE

Our dress code is designed to prepare our students for success in class. It allows them to fully focus on their work in the studio, while providing instructors with a clear perspective on their alignment. Arriving in proper attire creates an atmosphere of professionalism and community while providing an opportunity to demonstrate respect for faculty and craft.

For the 2023-24 year, dancers may continue to wear black or navy leotards and tights that they already own as we transition to the new dress code. Please keep the approved styles in mind when purchasing new dancewear. The approved styles for each program are listed below.

HAIR

Dancers’ hair should be worn in a classical bun or pinned, clipped, or tied neatly and securely from the face.

WHERE TO BUY

Steps on Broadway partners with the dance manufacturers in NYC and all offer a generous discount to Academy students. You can find the required styles at On Stage Dancewear, Bloch, Capezio, and in the Steps Shop on the 3rd Floor.

Approved Styles
Wear Moi navy blue leotard in the following adult styles: Galate, Cabriole, Arabesque, Pirouette. Child styles: Galate, Lovina, Thalia, Candide. Bullet Pointe pull-on skirt in Navy. Body Wrappers Total Stretch Mesh tights (Style A45/C45.)
Wear Moi navy blue T-Shirt in Conrad or Alpin styles.

Ballet:

Option 1: Navy leotard, pink tights or tights to match complexion, ballet slippers, or pointe shoes to match tights. Navy pull-on skirt optional.
Option 2: Navy T-shirt, black leggings or pants, black socks, and black ballet slippers.

Tap:

Option 1: Navy leotard with black tights, shorts, pants, or leggings and black tap shoes. 
Option 2: Navy T-shirt, black shorts or pants, black socks, and black tap shoes.

Jazz/Theater:

Option 1: Navy leotard with black tights, shorts, pants, or leggings.
Option 2: Navy T-shirt, black leggings, shorts or pants.
Shoes: Nude jazz shoes (Bloch Pulse to match complexion) for jazz and nude heels for theater. (LaDuca or Bloch Split Flex)

Modern/Contemporary:

Option 1: Navy leotard with black tights, shorts, pants or leggings, and bare feet or socks.
Option 2: Navy T-shirt, black leggings, shorts or pants, and bare feet or socks.

Hip Hop

All: Solid-colored top, shorts, leggings, or sweatpants with clean sneakers. No jeans.

UNDERGARMENTS

To minimize the visibility of lines under leotards and tights we recommend a neutral-colored seam-free brief or dance belt.

AUDITION AND REGISTRATION

AUDITION AND PLACEMENT

Pre-Professional Program (ages 10-18, by audition)

Please fill out this form and upload your photo and solo video. We will then contact you to schedule your live audition.

Solo videos can be a solo choreographed for you, a solo you created, or improvisation. It can be in any genre – whatever you feel best showcases you as a dancer! Solo videos should be between 1-3 minutes long.

High School graduates, ages 18-28, please visit the Professional Training Programs at Steps on Broadway.

REGISTRATION AND TUITION

2023-2024

If you are interested in joining one of these programs, please visit review the Audition information above.

Students in the Pre-Professional division will be sent registration materials upon their acceptance into the program.

Registration Requirements

  1. All classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis
  2. Annual Registration Fee: $65 (valid Sept – Aug)
  3. All registrations will be done online. We will not be accepting mailed forms or checks.

Registration is not considered final until payment has been processed.

Refunds

  1. Full tuition will be refunded only if written notification from the parent is received 24 hours PRIOR to the first class. A 75% refund, less total cost of all classes taken, will be granted before October 10, 2023. No refunds will be granted after that date, unless the program has been cancelled. Registration and all additional fees are non-refundable.
  2. Steps on Broadway reserves the right to provide virtual classes in lieu of In-Studio classes should conditions warrant doing so.
